Au VII<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle c\u2019\u00e9tait l\u2019ermitage Mar Sarkis de B\u00e9charr\u00e9. Vers la fin du XVII<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, l\u2019ermitage et le vieux b\u00e2timent furent l\u00e9gu\u00e9s par les notables de B\u00e9charr\u00e9, \u00e0 des moines carm\u00e9lites vivant dans la vall\u00e9e de Qadisha (vall\u00e9e sainte). La construction du nouveau couvent par les carm\u00e9lites s\u2019ach\u00e8ve en 1862. Le couvent Mar Sarkis et l\u2019ermitage constituent aujourd\u2019hui le mus\u00e9e et la tombe de Gibran.<\/p>\n<p>En 1926, alors qu\u2019il vivait encore \u00e0 New York, Gibran a exprim\u00e9 sa volont\u00e9 d\u2019acheter\u00a0 le monast\u00e8re des p\u00e8res carm\u00e9lites et l\u2019ermitage, pour faire de ce dernier le lieu de sa tombe.<\/p>\n<p>Le 22 ao\u00fbt 1931, la d\u00e9pouille mortelle de Gibran parvient \u00e0 B\u00e9charr\u00e9. Elargi par le Comit\u00e9 national de Gibran, des escaliers ont permis de relier les \u00e9tages. Vingt ans apr\u00e8s, en 1995, le mus\u00e9e fut modernis\u00e9 et dot\u00e9 d\u2019un \u00e9quipement de pointe, pour remplir ses fonctions selon des crit\u00e8res internationaux.<\/p>\n<p>Seize salles s\u2019\u00e9talent sur trois \u00e9tages o\u00f9 les tableaux sont expos\u00e9s d\u2019une mani\u00e8re chronologique, dans leur contexte historique et biographique. On y retrouve des \u0153uvres picturales, du mobilier, des manuscrits et la biblioth\u00e8que priv\u00e9e de Gibran.<\/p>\n<p>Essentiellement constitu\u00e9e de tableaux d\u00e9peignant la nature, les formes humaines dans leur nudit\u00e9, de portraits aux contours bien trac\u00e9s, l\u2019\u0153uvre picturale de Gibran d\u00e9voile son talent de peintre et sa qu\u00eate de l\u2019absolu. Il nous invite \u00e0 transcender le mat\u00e9rialisme rampant, \u00e0 nous purifier aspirant vers l\u2019infini.
